Did you know it’s not just “the customer is always right”???

Things must have taken a turn with the adoption of “the customer is always right.” I’m sure those retail pioneers like Marshall Field and Harry Gorden Selfridge had good intentions, but somewhere along the line the essence of the philosophy got a bit warped and has now empowered some pretty nasty behavior.

The customer is always right, in matters of taste.

— Harry Gordon Selfridge

We’re missing the crucial part at the end these days. It wasn’t just carte blanche to let customers act as they please. The customer is always right when it comes to what they prefer.

Maybe it’s like the person who got pooped on by a bird who proclaimed it as “good luck.” Or the bride who had a rainy wedding day. We’ve shaped it to make ourselves feel better. As customers, maybe we’ve just stopped it at “the customer is always right.” The end. Period. Because we like that better.

Now you can go forth and share this fun fact at parties.
